CONTENTS OF THIS RECIPE POST

I always recommend reading the entire post to get the best understanding of the recipe, helpful tips, information about ingredients, storage advice etc. Here’s a quick look at what topics are included in this recipe post :)

WHAT INGREDIENTS GO INTO A CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE?

  • Chocolate Ice Cream

This gives the milkshake flavour and thickens the consistency. This milkshake uses about 1 pint (4 scoops/2 cups) of chocolate ice cream. Since it is the main ingredient in this recipe, opt for a high-quality chocolate ice cream for the best flavour.

  • Milk

Adding some milk helps to thin the ice cream a little and ensure the milkshake is easily drinkable through a straw. I use whole milk for this recipe.

  • Chocolate Sauce

This intensifies the chocolate flavour of the milkshake. I use my delicious 5 min homemade chocolate sauce for this. In my opinion, the taste is far superior to store-bought chocolate syrups and will elevate your milkshake to the next level. You can substitute with a store-bought chocolate syrup if you prefer, but I recommend you give my recipe a try and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! :)

    OPTIONAL TOPPINGS:

  • Whipped Cream

The classic choice would be to top off your milkshake with a swirl of whipped cream.

  • Shaved Chocolate

I like to sprinkle some shaved chocolate over the top of the whipped cream because I think it looks beautiful and adds to the flavour.

  • Chocolate Squares

Finally, I like to finish off by sticking some chocolate squares partially into the whipped cream so they are poking up. This also adds to the aesthetic and you can pull out the chocolate and bite into it before taking a sip of your milkshake! I use 2 or 3 joined chocolate squares so that they can sit sturdily in the cream and still show above it. :)

VANILLA ICE CREAM OR CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM?

I definitely recommend using chocolate ice cream. Ice cream is the main ingredient in a milkshake and is therefore where much of the flavour comes from.

Using chocolate ice cream gives the stronger chocolate flavour you want in a chocolate milkshake. However if you don’t have any, you can substitute with vanilla ice cream. If you find the milkshake seems a little more vanilla flavoured, I’d recommend adding a bit more chocolate sauce, to your tastes.

THE PERFECT MILKSHAKE CONSISTENCY:

Some people prefer their milkshakes thicker than others. In Australia, we have a separate term for this, with a thicker milkshake being known as a “thickshake”. Thickshakes are made with only a dash of milk, whereas milkshakes use a bit more milk and their consistency is a little thinner than that of a thickshake, making them more easily drinkable through a straw.

Everybody has a preference and it’s very easy to adjust the consistency when making your own. If you want your milkshake to be a little thicker, add some more ice cream and blend again. If you want your milkshake to be a little thinner, add a bit more milk and blend again.

It’s that simple! :)

CHILL GLASSES

You don’t have to chill your milkshake glasses but if you want your milkshake to stay cold for longer, you can pop your milkshake glasses in the fridge for about 5 minutes before pouring in your milkshakes.

MILKSHAKE TOPPINGS

The options are virtually endless when it comes to milkshake toppings. You’ve probably seen heaps of pics in your Instagram feed of milkshakes loaded with whipped cream, biscuits, chocolate chunks and all sorts of syrups and sauces drizzled over the top or dripping down the sides. When you’re making your own milkshake you can choose to pare it back or load it up with toppings. Here are some ideas for what you could use:

  • Whipped Cream is a great base for adding other toppings like…

  • Sprinkles

  • Shaved Chocolate

  • Crumbled Nuts

  • Chocolate Squares

  • Crumbled cookies

  • Chocolate Sauce

  • A dusting of cocoa powder

  • A Strawberry or Cherry

I choose to top this milkshake with whipped cream, shaved chocolate and some chocolate squares!
